Tiberius. AD 14-37 AV Aureus. Rare issue struck at the Lugdunum (Lyon, France) Mint, c. 14-15 CE. (7.79g) RIC 1; C 45; Calico 307. Obverse: TI CAESAR DIVI – AVG F AVGVSTVS Laureate head right. Reverse: TR POT – XVII Tiberius standing in slow quadriga right, holding laurel branch and eagle-tipped sceptre. In exergue, IMP VII. The message on the obverse, TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVTVS (“Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of divine Augustus”), was vital in signifying transition of power in the early Roman Empire.
