George III Indian Peace Medal. Undated, but struck circa 1776-1812. Middle size. Second reverse. Unsigned. Adams 8.2, census number 9. Silver. 48.15g. Plain edge. Perhaps the Finest Known. Struck medal turn. Obverse: youthful armored bust right of George III, the die of the Lion and Wolf medals. Reverse: arms and supporters with Hannoverian charge (after 1801). Struck solid. Holed, with hanger. Minor obverse rim repair at 12 o'clock. Extremely attractive flashy silver in color with some iridescent blue highlights. A really lovely specimen and quite rare: Adams listed only 16 pieces in his modern census, seven of which were in institutional collections. In the census, he lists eight of the First Reverse and eight of the Second Reverse. This is the Eimer plate coin, #736c and before that, the plate coin for the 1936 Melville Jamieson work. Distributed by the British military establishment in North America during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The popularity of this type is enduring, and specimens are sought after by a wide variety of historically-minded collectors. Examples of this "Peace medal," which depict a youthful king who is armored and ready for war, were distributed to American Indians who were allied with the British Crown during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the conflict-laden intermezzo between. Most were worn until the hangers fell off; some were holed, worn through, and holed again. This example is a tactile connection to the era when Ohio was the frontier and Great Britain still controlled much of the American interior.
