Even though Gordian II's rule lasted a mere 21 days, his image graces the obverse of several coins from CE 238. (This is not an image of the coin offered by AUCM). Photo: Wikipedia.

Emperor Maximinus Thrax was not popular and mass discontent inspired by his oppressive rule resulted in a rebellion in Africa during 238. What sparked the revolt was the actions of Maximinus's procurator in Africa, who attempted to charge the maximum amount of taxes and fines possible. He also falsified charges against local aristocrats. Rioting led to the death of the corrupt official, and the mob turned to Gordian's father, demanding that he become emperor. The elder Gordian did not want to rule, but the threatening mob gave him no other option.

Because he was 79 years old, he insisted that his son, Marcus Antonius Godianus (Gordian II), rule alongside him. Gordian I and II entered the city of Carthage, where they had the overwhelming support of the populace and political leaders. They sent an embassy to Rome to gain the Senate's support for the rebellion. They confirmed the new emperors, and many provinces sided with the Gordians. However there was opposition to them from Capelianus, governor of neighboring Numidia, and a loyal supporter of Maximinus Thrax who held a grudge against Gordian I. Capelianus attacked Carthage with the Third Augustan Legion. Gordian II, who led an army of untrained recruits, lost the Battle of Carthage and was killed. His father, Gordian I, upon hearing about his son, took his own life. Their rule had lasted only 36 days.
