Stunning under-graded example in the classic PCGS Old Green Holder

This is the only 1909-S $5 Indian that has been awarded the desirable Gold CAC sticker, making it quite a unique piece to include in your collection. Plus it is severely under-graded by PCGS. We at AUCM have been evaluating coins for many years and this has all the qualities of a MS62—or even better—grade. Please examine the photos closely and you will see what we mean.

The 1909-S Indian $5 gold piece had a moderately low mintage of 297,200 coins. Additionally, many of them went directly into circulation. Consequently, the 1909-S Indian half eagle is among the most difficult of the entire series to locate in higher grades. Writes David Akers, “The 1909-S is one of the four or five rarest issues of the series.”

This issue has fantastic eye appeal. Akers writes, “The 1909-S is almost always sharply struck and the mintmark is bold and well defined .… Nearly all Mint State examples are frosty but I have seen a few of the satiny variety. Lustre is generally very good to excellent and, overall, a nice 1909-S looks very much like a nice 1908-S or 1910-S. Most specimens have a rich coppery gold color although some are light to medium yellow gold.”
