It was in 2006 that the United States Mint first released the American Buffalo Gold Coin, its very first 24-karat denomination, per the Presidential $1 Coin Act. The American Buffalo Gold Coin’s obverse and reverse present the famous coin designs crafted by renowned sculptor James Earle Fraser, who was once a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coin features a recreation of the popular “Buffalo” or “Indian Head” nickel that was produced from 1913 until 1938. Fraser’s original design was inspired by his love of the American Old West, its lore, and its people.

Artist James Earle Fraser, who crafted the original design for the $50 Gold Buffalo upon the Buffalo Nickel of 1913-1938.

Coin Insert signed by Thomas S. Cleveland

An American coin designer, illustrator, and fine artist, Thomas S. Cleveland has been credited with the design of fifteen U.S. Mint coins and medals. An Oklahoma native, Cleveland majored in advertising and illustration and design at East Texas University. It was in 2004 that he was one of twelve artists chosen from a pool of 250 applicants to work in the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program. The Artistic Infusion Program began in 2004 in order to develop new coin and medal designs. Cleveland served in that program until 2014, when he was one of just three remaining artists in the program.
