1876 $100 Gold Union, George T. Morgan design NGC GEM Proof Ultra Cameo w/box

Lady Liberty is presented seated on the obverse, adorned in a beautiful gown and cap, holding an olive branch and scepter, with wheat stalks behind her and a ship’s arrival into port off in the distance. There are mountains behind the ship. The ship is symbolic of commerce. This motif is encircled by thirteen stars and the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "1876."

The reverse displays an eagle with wings spread wide apart, perched upon a shield, while grasping three arrows and an olive branch in its powerful talons. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed above, and the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST” is found on a ribbon above the majestic bird.

This gorgeous piece is a privately issued Gold Proof George T. Morgan 1876 $100 Union and was produced with 1/10 Troy oz. of .999 fine gold, based on a design sketch by Morgan that was not made into a pattern coin. This design for George T. Morgan's proposed 1876 $100 Union coin was first discovered in the summer of 2006 in a book of Morgan's sketches at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington.
