Here is an affordable example of what is considered our most beautiful coin design, the Saint-Gaudens double eagle, affectionately dubbed the ‘Saint’ in honor of its creator. There are 6,914 specimens graded MS64 by PCGS with 2,770 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $3,250.00 in the grade of MS64. Jeff Garrett writes, "As would be expected from its massive mintage, the 1914–S is among the most common dates of the entire series. Large groups of the date continue to be found in shipments arriving from Europe to this day. Most seen are satiny and bold, although many are found with handling marks from years of storage or from jostling about in storage bags. Most survivors are in the MS 62 to MS 65 grade range."

Augustus-Saint-Gaudens, the artist-medalist who crafted the stunning design for this double eagle series (1907-1933).
