It is difficult to see the difference between the assigned grade of AU58 and a Choice Mint State-63 coin here...!

Here’s a super deal for a 1914 Indian Head Eagle, from the creative genius of Augustus Saint-Gaudens—with a little help from President Theodore Roosevelt. It was Roosevelt’s brainstorm to place the iconically American Indian headdress atop the head of Miss Liberty. PCGS has graded 381 as AU58 with 2,357 finer. Collectors Universe prices AU58 as $1,500.00.

Writes Jeff Garrett, “The mintage for this issue [151,000] is somewhat less than earlier Philadelphia Mint issues. The outbreak of World War I probably had something to do with that. The date can be found with relative ease in all grades below Gem. Gem and Superb Gem coins are quite rare. Most coins seen are well struck and light green–gold color is the norm.”

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who crafted the design—with a little help—of the Indian Head gold eagle.
