Here's a fin de siècle example of the ever-popular Type 3 Liberty head double eagle. Struck in 1898 at the San Francisco Mint, such pieces are cherished by enthusiasts of issues of the famed mint in California. They spent much time in canvas mint bags, possibly traveling to and from European banks. Thus many 1898-S double eagles have bag marks and abrasions. Because of this, it is difficult to acquire this issue in MS64 and above. The piece being offered by AUCM is an affordable one that would be a nice addition to your collection.

The 1898-S is among the most available issues in the Liberty head double eagle series. That is why it is being offered at such a good price in its MS62 grade. PCGS has graded 10,843 in MS62 with 8,902 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $2,750.00 in MS62.
