Many consider the 1895 Proof Morgan dollar to be the "King of the Morgans." It has been given this esteemed title because not one business strike 1895-P Morgan dollar has ever been discovered. Despite the fact that the Philadelphia Mint reported a mintage of 12,000 silver dollars dated 1895, none have ever been located. It is possible that they were melted down, or perhaps it was an error in accounting at the Mint. It is because there are no business strikes pieces available that enormous upward price pressure has been put on the 880 proof specimens struck that year. That total population cannot satisfy the strong demand for this issue, resulting in collectors paying tens of thousands of dollars for even circulated pieces.
