1890 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS MS62 (CAC)
Better date, low mintage issue from Philadelphia Mint!
Here’s an attractive piece—with the desirable green CAC sticker—to add to your collection.
David Akers writes, “The 1890 is a scarce date in all grades. It is considerably rarer than the lower mintage 1889 and is comparable overall to the 1879, 1880 and even the highly regarded 1882 .… Choice mint state specimens are quite rare and true gems are seen so infrequently that they must be considered to be very rare.”
NGC Coin Explorer writes, “The Philadelphia Mint only struck 75,940 coins in 1890. While this is a better date, it is still available in grades up to MS62. However, the population drastically drops in MS63, and falls even further in choice.”
PCGS has graded 316 as MS62 with 91 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $6,500.00 in MS62. In CAC, there are 33 in MS62 with just 4 finer. CAC prices this issue at $7,200.00 in MS62.
