1880-S $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS68 "Registry Set Piece and Conditional Rarity"

What collectors love about San Francisco Mint Morgan dollars, especially the 1880-S, is their consistently superior quality. They have a "WOW" factor that is undeniable. When you walk a coin show and a coin grabs your attention, pulling you to that table, 9 times out of 10 it will be an S-mint Morgan dollar! This specimen would be right at home in a Conditional Rarity set or a Registry Set. Or it could be a super-high graded piece as the centerpiece of a collection!

David Bowers tells us, "The 1880-S is a delightful Morgan dollar, combining usually-excellent strike and lustre.... The majority of Mint State pieces in existence today were released during the dispersal of the Treasury hoard [of] 1962-1964." Many of the early S-mint Morgan dollars were produced and summarily stored in 1000-piece canvas mint bags, never to see the light of day until many years later. These dollars were not distributed to the public until starting in 1913. Many were paid out over the years, especially the 1950s. However, reports John Kamin in 1971 in The Forecaster, about 1,6000,000 of them were sold during 1962-1964.
