Token - 1876 Libertas Americana Copper by Lingg & Brothers, Pa-Ph 220B NGC MS66 Brown

     We at AUCM are quite pleased to offer this desirable merchant token from our nation's centennial: an 1876 Libertas Americana Copper Token by Lingg & Brothers (Philadelphia) graded NGC MS66 Brown. This would be the perfect addition for the collector of centennial Americana--numismatic and other memorabilia from the year 1876. It would also be an affordable alternative to the original Libertas Americana medal, with its quite high price for original pieces.

     The post-Civil War era saw the American people start to reunite in their national patriotism, and that new spirit saw the image of the Libertas Americana medal reemerge as a national symbol. Die sinker and medalist John Adams Bolen crafted a 25mm die carrying the Libertas Americana motif, to be placed on patriotic medals and merchant tokens in commemoration of the national centennial. In due course, this die was paired with 12 different reverse dies, which resulted in 12 distinctive die varieties. All of these specimens are scarce to rare, and have been produced in silver, copper, bronze, brass and white metal. When considering the various metals used for striking these pieces, we find there are 32 die/metal combinations with Bolen's design.
