BG- 932A, 1876 California Fractional Gold 50C, Liberty Octagonal PCGS MS65 PL
“Baby Head” left, 13 cinquefoil stars around, coronet separated from 6th star, date spaced 18 7 6; value and CAL in wreath. Extremely Rare; listed in Breen-Gillio as Unique, but this is not the Jay Roe piece, nor the one that appeared on eBay 4/25/2005 and purchased by Christopher Terry (Old West Gold), to be reoffered at $12,500; there is also an AU58 in the Mike Locke Collection. Evidently a fourth example. Blazing, flashy bright gold Gem Brilliant Uncirculated—the finest known of this type, by a wide margin.
1876 Gold 50C Liberty Head Octagonal, possibly Unique? (Breen).
Period Two – Jeweler’s issues struck between 1859 and 1882.
Redbook Type: Small Liberty Head / Value & CAL in Wreath
Made by California Jewelry Co.
Obverse: 13 ‘rosette’ stars with the ends rounded as petals. The 6th star does not touch the point of the coronet whereas on BG-932 it does. The 8 of the date is closer to the 1 than on BG-932 and is further away from the 7.
Reverse: 1-2 DOLLAR CAL within a wreath. Same as BG-932.
This variety has been assigned an X because the obverse differs from that of BG-932.
NOTE: This newly reported variety, Bowers & Merena, Harry Bass, Jr., 5-9-1999 poses the problem of number assignment. BG-932W has been assigned to what was formerly BG-964. It was identified by Heritage as a California Jewelry variety (not unknown maker). So, because of a different obverse than BG-932, this new variety was assigned BG-932X (now (932A).
