1868 $10 Liberty Head Eagle, J-663 Pattern PCGS PR65 (CAC)
Beautiful and rare. This dramatic piece would be perfect for the specialist in pattern coinage. This pattern from the famed Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection is believed to be a creation of James B. Longacre.
The obverse presents a large Liberty bust facing left surrounded by thirteen stars and the date below. The reverse depicts a small eagle with raised wings as the primary motif, a scroll carrying the motto in the field above, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/TEN D. encircles the devices near the rim. This pattern was struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. According to USPatterns.com, this attractive gem is one of around a dozen such examples struck in aluminum. Small numbers were produced in gold and copper.

PCGS has graded 2 as PR65 with none finer. In CAC, there is one in PR65 with none finer. Writes Heritage Auctions, “Flashy, brilliant surfaces exhibit a few hints of pale gold but are almost entirely silvery in color. Partial contrast between the fields and devices enhances the CAC-endorsed visual appeal.” Judd-663, Pollock-736, Low R.6.
