The Charlotte Mint reduced its gold dollar output from more than 41,000 coins in 1851 to 9,434 pieces in 1852. In fact, production was cut across all facilities, with the 1852 Annual Mint Director's Report explaining, "The demand for them [gold dollars] is very moderate compared with that for the larger coins." Doug Winter estimates 20 to 30 1852-C gold dollars survive in all Uncirculated grades. He notes that examples are "surprisingly difficult to locate with clean fields."
Currently there are 12 graded as MS-63 with 15 higher at NGC. Sources cite the belief that 1852-C may be more available than suggested by its low mintage, but a simple glance at NGC's population instantly shows the issue's scarcity at the Choice BU grade level.
This specimen exhibits generous eye-appeal for a coin of such diminutive dimensions takes advantage of reasonably fresh dies that produced very good detail throughout, including boldly impressed stars and fine delineation of the wreath details. Brief, fleeting hairlines dash across the lemon-bright surface and a small planchet flake may be seen just right of the base of the portrait.
