Here’s a fantastic—and rare—high grade type coin to include in your collection. This dramatic Premium Gem is sharply struck throughout and the classic obverse design has a simple medallic quality.

The lustrous surfaces are draped with golden-brown, blue, and lavender-gray patina. The Small Date 1837 No Stars half dime is conditionally rare in MS66, especially with CAC endorsement. PCGS has graded 15 as MS66 with 10 finer. In CAC, there are 10 in MS66 with 6 finer.

Gordon Wrubel writes, “The Small Date has a FLAT TOP 1 and the date is arranged in a STRAIGHT LINE. The Large Date has PEAK TOP 1 and the digits CURVE around the contour of the rim …. PCGS Population figures show the Small Date to be about three times scarcer in total numbers graded. Mint State numbers show the Small Date to be about twice as scarce as the Large Date.”
