Ex. Norweb:3562. One of two known struck in Copper. 140.9 grains, 28.0mm. As described in the 1988 Norweb catalog as "...Almost full mint red and traces of brown. Lint mark across reverse. Obverse die failing in the left field, giving the piece the appearance of a bent coin. Only two known, and this is probably the only specimen known in copper (we know differently today). Douglas recorded two from this die combination, one in silver and one in copper.

The obverse is from the same "unfinished" die as seen on the preceding lot (N.101-AA). The reverse, obviously a 19th-century product, bears 13 interlinked rings, a mullet (star) within each, surrounding a central, stellate band with the usual Fugio legends. This is probably another of the Bushnell fantasy pieces."

Purchased by the Norwebs from B. Max Mehl on January 9, 1953; earlier, from S.H. & H. Chapman's sale of the C.T. Whitman Collection, August 1893, Lot 342.

$19,500.00

One of just two known to the us struck in copper (Ford:316, see more current details above right), with two additional specimens known in silver (Garret:1509 and B&M January, 2002:5).

On August of 2018, Kevin Vinton published "The Sun Rays Collection, Part 1, Fugio Coppers & Early American Medals" as a Fixed Price List #2. The only recent offering of a Newman 101-EE occurred in this publication as lot #65 and priced at $17,500. The Choice specimen offered last year was certifed as MS63 Brown by PCGS. (see attached image)

Here it is desribed as:

"Circa 1860s (1787) Fugio Copper “Restrike,” Stars in Rings Reverse, Newman 101-EE, R.8, PCGS MS63BN. Probably the most important of the three die marriages of Newman 101, this features reverse EE which was also mated with a New Haven Restrike obverse, Newman 103. The reverse is clearly a product of the Scoville Manufacturing Co. given the style of the letter punches, the large dentils, and the thin, bold rings. Almost identical to the regular New Haven Restrike reverses but with the addition of 13 stars within the rings and triangular points around the central label. There are just two known in copper, this and the Norweb example, and two additional in silver. As beautiful as it is rare, the surfaces are pristine, the detail unworn, and the color a perfect medium brown. To the best of our knowledge, no examples in either metal have been sold since the Ford sale, although we note a similarly rare example of the other use of this reverse die, Newman 103-EE, sold in the Newman sale (Heritage 11/2014:3076) for $41,125.
