This dramatic, super rare Gold 25c issue was first discovered in 1990 by PCGS coin grader Rick Montgomery. Reviewing the PCGS population, it states that five have been graded there (and none at NGC). PCGS reports 2 carrying the grade of MS64, with one finer (MS66). However, PCGS says, "1 or 2 known?" Heritage, in its April 2021 auction listing, writes that those five include resubmissions. Thus there may indeed be only 2 in existence.

This rarity from 1870s San Francisco was crafted and produced by Frontier, Deviercy & Co. of San Francisco. Frontier, Devierey & Co. purchased the jewelry firm of the Joseph Brothers, the acknowledged pioneers of the development and production of California Fractional Gold coinage. This octagonal 25 cent gold piece features upon the obverse Liberty head derivative of the regular U.S. issues of its day. Liberty is encircled by six stars. Dentils are found around the coin's rim on both sides. The reverse presents an agricultural wreath and within it is "1/4 DOLLAR 1871."

Obverse: 6 stars; 1st star below chin, 2nd star left of nose. (Same as BG-718.
Reverse: 1 4 DOLLAR 1871 within double-bowed wreath. 7 berries on left branch, 8 on right. First 1 in date recut as is the 1 in the fraction. AR in DOLLAR is incomplete. The top of the D touches the out-stretched leaf.
