The majority of the remaining collectible 1861 $2.50 coins today have the “new” or “modified” reverse, first put into use in 1859. This modified reverse is distinguished from the old by noticeably smaller arrowheads which are relatively widely-spaced and the lowest of which is distant from the CA of AMERICA. The present specimen displays buttery-yellow gold surfaces and rendered to the Choice Mint State grade by a few trivial hairlines.
